Best Deck Materials for Northern California Weather

Northern California's climate — with its warm, dry summers and wet winters — creates unique demands on outdoor structures. Choosing the right deck material is essential for longevity, appearance, and minimizing maintenance. As a deck builder serving Petaluma, Marin County, and Sonoma County, Travis Carter Construction has worked with every major decking material. Here's what we recommend and why.
Pressure-Treated Lumber
Pressure-treated pine is the most budget-friendly option and holds up reasonably well in our climate. It requires regular staining or sealing every one to two years to prevent moisture damage during the rainy season. While it's a solid choice for homeowners on a budget, it does require ongoing upkeep and will show wear sooner than premium alternatives.
Redwood
Redwood is a North Bay classic and for good reason. It's naturally resistant to rot, insects, and decay — perfect for our wet winters. It has a beautiful warm tone that complements the region's natural landscape. Redwood does benefit from periodic sealing, but even left untreated, it weathers to an attractive silver-gray patina. It's more expensive than pressure-treated lumber but less costly than most composites.
Composite Decking
Brands like Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon have become increasingly popular in Sonoma and Marin Counties. Composite decking is made from a blend of wood fibers and plastic, making it highly resistant to moisture, fading, and staining. It's virtually maintenance-free — no staining, sealing, or sanding required. The upfront cost is higher than wood, but the long-term savings on maintenance often make it the most cost-effective choice over a 15-to-20-year period.
Our Recommendation
For most North Bay homeowners, we recommend composite decking for its durability and low maintenance, or redwood for those who love natural wood and are willing to do occasional upkeep. Every property is different, so we're happy to walk you through the pros and cons based on your specific situation, budget, and aesthetic preferences.
